Gold filled is pure gold that’s pressure bonded permanently with an underlying metal (such as brass, copper, or silver.) making it incredibly durable. Gold filled jewelry is meant to be a lifetime product because the layer of gold is quite thick. Do you know what that means? That means it’s less likely to ever chip, flake, or tarnish.
Gold filled is an industry accepted term and all items are stamped accordingly. Because it has a thick layer of 14k gold, the price tag is higher; but I stand by gold filled material knowing from personal and professional experience. It is so worth spending a little bit more so you can wear it daily for years on end.
When shopping for jewelry from other brands (big box, or small shops) check to see if the pieces are gold filled, or gold plated. Each one has very different finished metals. There’s a lot more gold in gold filled vs gold plated. It’s actually legally required for gold filled jewelry to contain 5% or 1/20 gold by weight.
Gold plated has a thin layer (.5 microns) of gold that is added to a base metal by electroplating. Often, the layer of gold is so thin it will chip, tarnish, and fade with daily wear. Those pieces of jewelry are notorious for leaving your fingers green, irritating your ears, and can cause rashes on your skin. Hard pass!
